Ulm is the first real city you pass through as you travel down the Danube from its source. Ulm has about 125,000 people. It lies on the border of Baden-Wurttemberg and Bavaria. Ulm was first mentioned in 854 and the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa declared it an imperial free city. During the Napoleonic era, it ceased being an imperial free city and first became part of Bavaria and the Wurttemberg. Neu-Ulm (New Ulm) lies just across the river in Bavaria.
