Sremski Karlovci (Serbia) 5

This town is better known by its German name, Karolwitz. It is located upriver from Belgrade in the Voijodina district formerly part of the historical Kingdom of Hungary It was the site of the treaty of the same name when the Hapsburg Emperor reconquered Hungary from the Turks and it became part of the Hapsburg Empire after that treaty in 1699. During the regime of the "religion of peace" Mohammedan Turks in Serbia, this little town became the center of the Serbian Orthodox Church because of the terrible persecution going on inside Serbia and Bosnia. It still contains the second oldest Orthodox seminary in the world. It passed to Yugoslavia after WWI and with the destruction of that country is now part of Serbia. It has many monuments and about 10,000 people.
