I never realized that this was a rare word. I have heard it used before by others and I have used it. This is probably just another sign that the internet-absorbed under-thirty crowd have developed incredibly stunted vocabularies. By the way, I'm only thirty-eight.

You see this word quite a bit in 19th and early 20th Century fiction, but not much since the 1950s; seems to have been shoved out of common use by 'slacking' and 'hanging out'.
