Berg is one of the most interesting and unusual baseball players ever. As a player, he was nothing special, just a backup, even third catcher on various teams in the 20's and 30's. He didn't hit much and was a rather marginal player. However, he was a genius and a scholar who spoke many languages, and even served as a spy during World War 2,and was given many dangerous assignments, these were particularly dangerous since he was a Jew doing many risky missions behind Axis lines. I read a biography of him about a decade ago- a fascinating life, I strongly recommend it.
