As a Yankee fan, I should stick to the party line and say the guy was just a pain in the ass. As a fan of the game, and of individuals, I always liked Lee, except when he pitched against my boys.

Well, Robbo, as for why there's a few 70's Red Sox that's probably because I'm from Boston originally and this was the crew they had when I was first getting into the game. Lee was an effective lefty for this club, at his peak one of the best lefties they had in, say, the second half of the 20th century. A hilarious, colorful character, and a 'lefty' not only on the mound, but also in real life. His book "The Wrong Stuff" is an interesting and amusing read. When they traded him to Montreal for Stan Papi, an extremely marginal utility infielder it was an outrageous insult.

Hmmmm....we seem to have more than a few of my Redsox guys here. That's why they are always a fun team to watch. They score a lot of runs and have more than their share of kooks on the team. Bill "Spaceman" Lee is one of the most interesting characters to have ever played the game. In fact, he's also some of the most interesting characters to have played the game. The self-titled "most-consistent seventeen game winner in the league (after going 17-11, 17-15, and 17-9 in 1973, 1974, and 1975) was a sportswriter's dream, a fan's delight, an a manager /owner's nightmare. He was cocky, talky, and he produced on the field. His best years were behind him after he tore up his shoulder during a 1976 on field brawl with the Yankees, but Lee was a great entertainer throughout his 14 years. I hear that he still plays occasionally on whatever asteroid he may be visiting that day.
