He could take to the heights of joy and the depths of sorrow with a voice that was aged to perfection in an oak cask (with fine bourbon). You could hear the church in his voice and you could hear Basin Street. He could swoop to high hollers and drop to a low earthy growl in a beat. There's never been a better soul singer. Al Green was maybe a distant second.
