Although the actuality was somewhat grim... the photo is still awe-inspiring and will fill with pride even the very least patriotic of Americans

It demonstrates the pride of America and the patriotism of that country. I, being a Canadian, still think that it shows the honnor of America and exclaimes that they ARE the most powerful nation in the world. Although after I saw Flags of Our Fathers some of my opinion changed about this painting, therfore I will rate it a 3. For those who asked "why did Flags of our Fathers change your opinion" watch the movie and maybe you will figure out.

This is a very emotional photo for me. The sacrifices of lives (both American and Japanese) was tremendous but the victory of Americans over the Imperialists was a necessary evil.

one of the most famous pictures. means a bit more after seeing the movie Flags of our Fathers. I also started reading the book. nice to put names with those faces. and get an idea of what happened to those men. sad to know that some had died and a couple others had though times afterwards.

Truly an ultimate spectacle of American Soldiers.

Its a favorite of mine for some reason...
UPDATE: Staged? Sorta. There were two pictures taken. The one we all know is the second of the two when they wanted a bigger flag up there.
