Stunning image. Ironically enough, using the bombs may be exactly what prevented their later, and more terrible use during the Cold War, since we all had the images of death and suffering burned on our collective consciousness. The nuclear trip-wire may have been a good deal flimsier without the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs as precedents. One of the philosophers in the field of aesthetics, Beardsley I think, described the "sublime" as that which mixes the beautiful with an undertone of existential terror. The mushroom clouds have some of that.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. How someone can make a decision to do something like this while sitting in a comfortable chair in a well protected mansion is beyond my comprehension. It would seem that there would have to be a better way. We should all really hope and pray there is.

A sickening reminder of the thousands who died and the beginning of the atomic age. Hopefully mankind will never do this again but the way the world has become I feel that is only wishful thinking.

Chilling and unforgettable.

Famous because it ended the worst conflict in the history of the world and was the potential beginning of one that would overshadow all that wars before it and, if wars and human existence continued thereafter, after it.
