 | Drummond (54) 05/12/2006 | The Peace and Freedom Party dates back to the mid 1960s and formed out of the anti-war movement (my parents were among the first organizers). They ran local candidates, and later started to run "symbolic" or "educational" campaigns for larger offices knowing they probably wouldn't win. They did manage to collect a large number of votes in the early years (compared to other third party candidates) partly because of the cynicism of the time with the two main parties, but also because they ran celebs like Eldridge Cleaver and Dr. Benjamin Spock for president, and often had bands like Santan, the Grateful Dead, and Credence Clearwater Revival holding free performances to benefit their efforts.
Over the years they kind of degenerated into a battleground for various fringe groups hoping to make good with ballot status. They briefly lost ballot status, mostly due to the rise of the Green Party, but seem to have made it back and are running candidates that nobody has ever heard of. All they can do is split the splitting vote. They are left wingers of course, socialist variety. The hippies have long since sought greener pastures.
Get it? Greener pastures? Hahahahahaha. I kill myself. (sigh).
