I'm partial to the Irish version, Sean. It has a nice ring to it and might keep everyone from calling him junior.

You could always go with Jonathan or Johnathan. That way you could still call him Jon or Jonny as a nickname and avoid the "Junior."

John is not a bad name. I personally would rather not name a child after a parent. A middle name fine.I have always thought each kid should have their own name. My husband is a junior named after his dad. He hates it. especially when his dad's side of the family still called him "ronnie" even though he is in his mid forties.

wouldn't I have to change my name to 'john'?

I'm the III and I will name my son the IV. It's not a ego thing at all and I appreciated my name even though I never knew my father and I am by no means wealthy at all. Just cool because not many people name thier children after thier father, grandfathers anymore. It's not a rich thing anymore and of course I have a biased opinion. Congratulations either way :)

No way....Unless you plan on conditioning your son to have a son and name him John III. You'll be John Sr. and will have to live up to that. If Junior screws up, well, that's your John Jr. John is such a boring, routine name as well.

My name is John and it has suited me well. However, I don't want people thinking I've got a huge ego and need to name my son after myself. Originality is also popular right now, and copying my own name would probably be considered boring.
