I grew up knowing a kid called Joaquin (pronounced wah-keen..close enough) and everyone called him Joey.

Nope. Hard to spell and pronounce. Skip it. Sounds Jewish as well. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Joachim is a family name from way back in the 1700's. I think it is a really cool sounding name, but there really isn't a good nickname for this one. Its pronounced wah-keem, so what do you call him for short...Wok?.
