Only if some lunatic sadist tied me to the motorcycle.

Really wanted to do this when I was twenty something, but never managed to get further than Big Sur from Vancouver.

Thirty odd years later, I'm not sure that trying this would be a good idea.

I'd probably leave my kidneys somewhere out on Route 66.

It would be a interesting and rewarding activity, but I don't ride the motorcycle, and don't plan to get one anytime soon.

Absolutely! I traveled the 95 corridor between DC and Boston, roughly 500 miles, for a few years in the early nineties and there's nothing quite like that stretch of mayhem. Tire caps, railroad ties, lounge chairs, vinyl siding, moon craters, I damn near hit them all. If I survived that, cross-country would be a piece of cake.

Motorcycle- no, car-yes. I think it would be quite interesting to cruise all over the country!

Did it. Solo. Boston to L.A. When I first returned to the US from the military, I had an offer from a friend to return to California where we had been stationed together. I had one dilemma however; I owned both a motorcycle (Yamaha FJ-1200) & a car, and I couldn't feasibly take them both with me... After milliseconds of arduous consideration, my choice was to sell the car to finance my motorcycle trip. After minimal planning, I threw some soft saddlebags and a rainsuit on the bike and set out solo, with plans to roll into whatever town I found myself in when my body said quitting time each evening (preferably some tiny burg well off the beaten path), find a cheap but decent room, get a hot shower and a hearty meal, pass out on the bed, then get up before sunrise and do it again the next day. One day I scored a room with it's own jacuzzi and bought a decent bottle of wine for myself - At that point my body really needed both! It was a great time being all alone, completely self-sufficient somewhere in the middle of the big ol' US of A, and just pointing it westward to embrace whatever new sights, sounds, and folks that my adventure brought me. I had a lot of time (no music) to do a lot of soul-searcing and really enjoyed the time alone with just my thoughts. I learned a lot about myself and gained immeasurable self confidence, and have never been afraid to try any new adventure since. Unfortunately I didn't take enough time to enjoy some of the great attractions that this country has to offer, but I gained a whole new appreciation of my own beautiful country after enjoying Europe for several years just prior. It was one of the best things I've ever done. I've since gone on to 3 more cross-country drives in autos, each time taking more stuff with me, until my most recent trip in a station wagon, with wife, child & dog. We went over the Great Lakes, through Canada much of the way. Fun in a "Vacation" way, but I still yearn for the reflective solitude of my very first trip. My wife & I also did a great cross-country AmTrak trip (Northern route through the Rockies in winter) on our honeymoon with a private room, and were treated like royalty when the Porter and Engineer found out we were on our honeymoon. Highly recommended - If you ever get the chance to ride or drive cross-country, it beats heck out of flying if you have the time. It's a great big country, with many things to see, and countless new people to meet along the way. I've also long had a desire to ride from Mexico up the Alcan highway up through Alaska to the Arctic Circle, and I've also long dreamed of riding down to the tip of Baja. I guess I'm hooked!

Nope, don't know how to ride one... I would like to get a monocle, top hat and tails and other c. 1850 garb, and one of those bicycles with a tiny wheel and an enormous wheel and ride through, say, downtown Des Moines though...

I would not mind going cross country. I would not do it on motorcycle. I would prefer to be a bit more comfortable in a vehicle of some kind. visiting the country and making stops would be fun though.

It would seem to me that this would be one of the most uncomfortable ways to get across country. You can't really stretch out or anything, and if you are planning on staying somewhere for a while you cant take much with you. Might be fun but its not very practical.

I'm with Kamy: I'd be more worried about the cost of the trip, than the actual cycle ride cross country. I plan on buying a motorcycle soon anyway; so if the time should arise that I have the money and the time; sure, I'd love to!

If I HAD one, and enough money to pay for necessary lodgings & meals on the trip, yeah! And, of course, if my husband could be with me (on his own bike, that is; I couldn't imagine it being much fun if I were just clinging on his back while he gets to ride).

This used to be a constant fantasy of mine as a kid. I loved the movie "Easy Rider" for that reason alone. Advancing age, of course, has a way of changing our expectations and desires. Riding a motorcycle even down the street really has no appeal for me any longer. A relative of mine died on one of these things, and the older I get, the more dangerous they seem.

Never really been turned on to the idea of a motorcycle. So much power and so little protection...they flat scare me a little. Not My thing.

Absolutely, on a Suzuki or Yamaha, the bike would have to be red and white.

Absolutely! Of course, I'd have to learn how to ride a motorcycle first. When I've been out on the open highway doing some interstate traveling and seen those Honda Goldwings, I've always thought they looked cool/fun. The best thing about traveling on a motorcyle is that I could easily zip around the unbeaten paths. Invariably, the most interesting things I have seen/experienced when tooling across the country are the everyday things but not common or standard for someone who lives in a major metropolis. Little conversations I've had with locals in small Texas towns, roadside "landmarks" that most people aren't even aware are there ... it's great stuff.
