Was a hitting instructor with the Braves and other organizations well up into his old age. I have heard that Appling could intentionally foul off pitches that were too close to to let go, but not good enough to turn into a solid hit. It never did a pitcher much good to 'nibble the corners' with Appling at the plate. You could take a restroom break, plus go for a hotdog and soda during his at bat. Great eye and knowledge hitting.

Probably, along with Cronin, the greatest American League shortstop between the wars. Played from 1930-1950, all of it with the White Sox, and hit as high as 388 in 1936. Not a lot of power, but a steady glove and a very fine contact hitter.
