 | Vudija (98) 02/11/2006 | (Rated high, because it has the potential to be very dangerous) It is the only volcano on European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years; it is said to be the most dangerous volcano in the world because of the 3 million people who live nearby it and because of its explosive nature when it DOES erupt. Some of the more severe eruptions occurred in 1660, 1682, 1694, 1698, 1707, 1737, 1760, 1767, 1779, 1794, 1822, 1834, 1839, 1850, 1855, 1861, 1868, 1872, 1906, and 1944. The eruption in March 1944 (the last eruption of Vesuvius), destroyed the villages of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, Massa di Somma and part of San Giorgio a Cremano. But, because it's been so quiet since the 1944 eruption, the area was declared a national park and is open to tourists.
