Outside of Brian Doyle, possibly the best post-season ballplayer I have ever witnessed. Compare to Rafael Palmeiro, who I can honestly say I've never seen him get a hit. Reggie was the most prolific home run hitter during the era where home runs were not that prolific.

Though a flawed player who struck out a lot and steadily became a worse player in the field as he went on, the postseason heroics and the 500 plus homers show that he was indeed worthy. As for the " fame" part, he was quite possibly the single most famous player in baseball in the late 70's Reggie could run when he was younger, keep in mindthat he was a big football prospect too. Detractors like to point to his relatively low batting average of .262, but note that he spent a lot of his prime in Oakland, which was and is probably the best pitcher's park in The A.L. A self-absorbed, self promoting jerk, but an exciting player who earned the nickname "Mr. October."
