 | Drummond (60) 07/28/2006 | He was the "conservative" of the civil rights movement under King. While Stokely Carmichael and others were pushing King to oppose the war in Vietnam, Young pushed for King to stay focused on civil rights, although Young also personally opposed the war. He was the voice of moderation, and when he offered to resign because he felt he was out of step with the rest of the group, King asked him to stay because he needed that counsel. Young went on to be a great mayor of Atlanta.

He was active in the civil rights movement, helped draft the Voting Rights Act of 1964, and was present when Martin Luther King was assassinated. He successfully ran for Congress in Georgia and later served as the U.S. representative to the U.N. during the Carter Administration. He got in hot water in this position when he had a meeting with the PLO. After leaving the UN gig he ran for the mayoral office in Georgia's biggest city. His last elective effort was an unsuccessful campaign against Zell Miller for the Governor's seat in this same state. Andrew Young played a key role in the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics.
