I would argue that this song is at least as much about class as war, and actually probably more about class. While bassist Stu Cook's father was a lawyer, the rest of the band came from working class backgrounds, unlike many of their Bay Area contemporaries. Like Sly and The Family Stone, The Flamin' Groovies, and a few others, Creedence weren't totally buying into the hippie lifestyle, and in fact they showed a considerable amount of disdain for it. A hard hitting tune with incredibly sarcastic yet truthful lyrics, which show that the wealthy and powerful often cause conflicts, while those of an ordinary or underprivileged background are the ones who wind up paying the price for it.
