This is as much about the social stratum of population that fights our wars as about being against war. It is the people from the "Red States" who fight our wars. Read the roll call of the dead. Where are you Upper West Side, Brentwood and Hollywood?

The truth hurts and this tune is painfully truthful about WHO fights wars. (poor bastards like my friends)

One of the best anti-war songs - probably the most overtly political in many ways as it addresses social issues of war as well as the war itself.

This is indeed an anti-Vietnam number, but it's coming from a very different place than the ones by, say, a Baez. I would argue that this song is at least as much about class as war, and actually probably more about class. While bassist Stu Cook's father was a lawyer, the rest of the band came from working class backgrounds, unlike many of their Bay Area contemporaries. Like Sly and The Family Stone, The Flamin' Groovies, and a few others, Creedence weren't totally buying into the hippie lifestyle, and in fact they showed a considerable amount of disdain for it. A hard hitting tune with incredibly sarcastic yet truthful lyrics, which show that the wealthy and powerful often cause conflicts, while those of an ordinary or underprivileged background are the ones who wind up paying the price for it.
