Great, powerful and understated song, sung by several people, but made famous by Pete Seeger. And to correct Drummond's review, it was the "Smothers Brothers show" that he was going to sing it on. He eventually did sing it on a later episode of the show, at the end of a medley.

Pete Seeger wrote this song during Viet Nam about a military group that is training in Louisiana. The men of the unit start out waist deep but continue into the river until the water gets up to their necks. He was going to sing it on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, but CBS banned it. The management later changed its mind and Seeger did get to sing the song in early 1968.

This is the song, I think, that Pete Seeger had intended to sing on the Ed Sullivan Show, but it got pulled at the last moment by the network censors.
