Today is December 9. On this day in history, in 1942, we witness the birth of future member of the Football Hall of Fame, Richard Marvin "Dick" Butkus. Butkus starred as a football player for the University of Illinois and the Chicago Bears. Here is a person without a doubt who is deserving of the HOF. He played for the Bears in the linebacker position. He was in the Pro Bowl nine times, and he was all league six times. Butkus recovered 25 fumbles in his career, an NFL record at the time of his retirement. He had to retire early because of injury. He fell out with George Halas of the Bears, but later came back as a color commentator on the radio and was lucky to be doing that during the Bears' 1985 Super Bowl year. He also is in the College Football Hall of Fame. Butkus was also named to the Walter Camp All-Century team in 1990, and was named as the sixth-best college football player ever by College Football News in 2000.
