He was the first to identity Jesus as the Messiah and by the words of Jesus, there was no greater man who ever lived. He instituted the baptism for the remission of sins and was the first preacher of the Gospel.

 | RichardMarshal (7) 01/19/2008 | Jesus prophecied, John the Baptist was the greatest person ever to walk the earth, that he was more than a prophet, that he was Elijah who ascended into Heaven upon his death, and that John the Baptist/Elijah will restore all things. Joshua was influenced by the teachings of John the Baptist, and mimicked John's use of "brood of vipers" in reference to false worshippers of God, and those who knew nothing of the spirit of God. Following the death of John the powers of Jesus became more awe inspiring, and of the characters in the Tanakh, the powers of Jesus most closely resembled those used by Elijah. John the Baptist was both strong spirited and humble, but at the time he did not understand he was Elijah. He said that he was destined to decrease so that Jesus could increase, and that if you had two cloaks, and someone in need desired a cloak, to give that cloak to the person in need. The spirit of John the Baptist, along with Moses, appeared alongside Jesus when he was with James, Peter and John. While Jesus said John the Batpist was the greatest, John saw himself as being unworthy of very much concerning Jesus.
