The
Battle of Brandy Station occurred in the American Civil War on June 9, 1863. Culpepper County, Virginia, was the site of the battle that lasted the entire day, was an all cavalry affair, and was the largest such battle of the war and one of the larger cavalry battles in history.
The battle resulted in a draw, but really was a Union strategic victory since henceforth, the previously dominant Confederate cavalry was either dominated by the Union forces or matched in the field.
General J. E. B. Stuart, Confederate commander, suffered a severe drop in reputation, being surprised twice this day, his renown suffered, and in fact he never recovered.
This battle was another strong support for the coming Union ascendancy in the East.
