A brilliant tactical move...but, sorry guys...this was Jackson's idea. He spent about two days talking Lee into the flanking maneuver. Here again however, Lee's managment led to disaster for the Confederacy.

As others have commented, the Battle of Chancellorsville was arguably General Lee's greatest victory during the war. From the first day (Apr 30, 1863), Union general Hooker had more than twice the number of troops than Lee, yet the last day of the battle (May 6) found the Union army in retreat due to extreme fortune and unconventional daring (e.g. splitting the force) by the Confederate military brass. On the downside, Lee suffered a higher casualty rate (troops that could not be easily replaced) and increased his feelings of invincibility (as others have noted), contributing to future setbacks (e.g. Gettysburg later that year). Nevertheless, the Confederate victory was decisive in that Lee's forces remained effective and the Union was placed on the defensive during the following months.

Even hack historians agree that this was Lee's best moment as a military general- long odds, seeminly suicidial tactic (dividing his smaller army) yet still achieve victory. . .the only downside is that it might have contributed to Lee's sense of his own invincibility and pride that eventually crippled him at Gettysburg. . .

Conservatism is right as this was probably Lee's most brilliant battle in the war.

I drove a vehicle all along Stonewall's route around the Union Army. The route goes for several miles and just missed detection by a few hundred feet. The good are lucky also. I wonder why that proves true more times that not.

This is my favorite battle of the Civil War, Lee had an army of about 55,000 compared to the Union army under Hooker with 130,000 and old Bobbie Lee was still able to beat the much larger force. The only thing bad which came from this battle was the death of Stonewall Jackson, the spirit of the south, without him the Army of Northern Virginia was no longer invincible. Back to the battle

It was Lee's greatest victory and a masterpiece of two great minds. If you want to learn more check out the book "Chancellorsville" by Stephen Sears.
