 | GenghisTheHun (181) 11/30/2007 | Today is November 30. On this day in history, in 1864, at Franklin, Tennessee, just south of Nashville, we witness the Battle of Franklin.
Quite frankly, my colleagues of the RIA, this is one of the sadder battles of the Civil War.
I shall omit the details and go to the end. The Confederates technically won a victory but smashed the Confederate Army of Tennessee by seventeen separate charges in which 16 Confederate Generals were casualties.
This action was often compared to Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg, but Franklin was much larger and bloodier than Pickett's assault!
The Confederates missed a golden opportunity. The South won this battle but lost the War in the West.
The site of the battlefield is also sad. It is in fast growing and pricey Williamson County, Tennessee. Development has eaten up the battle field. The place where General Cleburne fell is in the middle of a strip mall parking lot.
I leave two references. The first is my review of Williamson County, Tennessee, and the second is Wikipedia's entry on the Battle of Franklin.
