 | GenghisTheHun (177) 04/13/2007 | Today is April 13, Friday the thirteenth. On this date in history, in 1861, the United States troops in the garrison of Fort Sumter, in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina, surrendered to the attacking Confederates.
This started the American Civil War, and probably is one of the half dozen or so more important symbolic events in U. S. History. I would put it on the same level as the attack on Pearl Harbor and other such events. It raised great passion on both sides of the conflict and war became inevitable.
The American Civil War changed our country and society more than anything that has happened before or since with the possible exception that we went from a monarchy to a republic during the War of the American Revolution.
