 | GenghisTheHun (181) 02/16/2008 | Today is February 16, and on this date in history, in 1862, Confederate held Fort Donelson, in Stewart County, Tennessee fell to Union forces commanded by U. S. Grant.
This victory was important for two reasons. It was the real start of the rise of Grant's reputation, and its loss opened the Cumberland River to Union naval power. Middle Tennessee and Nashville were soon to pass into Union hands with long term disastrous consequences for the Confederate States of America. This victory also nailed down the adhesion of Kentucky to the Union.
