 | portecrayon (11) 03/08/2006 | The first land battle of the Civil War when Union troops surprise the confederates by taking the Phillipi Covered Bridge which is still in use today and is the nations only covered bridge serving a federal highway (US 250)
The Phillipi Covered Bridge was built in 1852 and spans the Tygart River in what is now West Virginia. The bridge has survived fires, floods,a war and restorations.
Still cannot understand why West Virginians did not put the Phillipi Covered Bridge on the back of their Quarter instead of the New River Gorge Bridge.
It is worth the side trip if passing thru the Mountain State and I promise the people of Phillipi will be the friendliest you ever met!
