Fromm Family Foods 5

I have a germ. shrt. pointer and a l.h. dachshund and they both do great on fromm dry food. My pointer is extremely picky and before i fed her fromm i tried feeding her several top quality pet foods, but she would eat them for a couple of days to a week and then start refusing to eat. With the fromm i rotate bags between the duck, salmon, and chicken and she has never refused a meal yet. I also love that i can rotate from one to the other with no problems. Both of their coats are so shiny and they have smaller bowel movements-always a plus-:) My pointer is a high energy dog and my vet told me recently that she is an athlete and in great shape, i attribute this to the fromm food and a good exercise regimen. My doxie never had a problem being picky-like most of his breed he'll eat almost anything-LOL.

If you have any questions or concerns about the canned food see fromm's website-I know the can food USE TO BE made in China, but the company has changed that and it's being made in the U.S.A. now. I've only ever fed the dry food and i recommend it highly.

Fromm foods are made in the United States and always have been. Their CANS were once made in China, then shipped and the food was canned here in the U.S. This has since been changed. Their cannery in China has been closed and they have relocated and are making the cans here in the United States.

Their food always has been made in the United States.

Everyone, please get your facts straight, okay?

I must say I am surprised at the wide range of reactions on this food. While I do agree on not liking that the canned portion is coming from out of the country. The dry food is great my dogs just love it, but as with anything dog food is not a one size fits all. I work at a feed store in Wisconsin and this is one of our best sellers. It is one of the better foods out on the market, while it will not be the best for every dog I would highly recommend it for anyone. For those of us who actually care about what we feed our pets know that the label (Full nutrition for every dog is a lie) look at Ol Roy aka: death on a plate. We need to know what our breads nutritional needs are and work from there, even then there is no one food that does it all. But in my eyes Fromms gold line is it for me and my kids

Don't like the idea that it is a Product of China, Developed in the USA. I want a healthy dog food that is made and is the product of the USA. My 2 dogs passed away from dog food that was on the recall list. One was Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance. I did get a can of Fromm Beef Entree from my groomer and my dogs didn't like it. I looked at the label and was horrified to see anything associated with China on my dog food can. Thank God they walked away from it.

Personally I love this brand! the dogs love it, I like the ingredients, they have a shinny coat and good skin (my one dog has a skin condition), good energy level, firm stools, and less stools as well.
The brand is all life stages, for all dogs...which is great since I own 4 very different dogs, and they all do well on this brand. its even good for the little guy, since the kibbles are small enough for our 7lb shih tzu to chew as well.
They're are several flavors (different protein sources, and they have a different kibble shape) and when the dogs get board of eating one, I switch them to a different one and they have no problem switching within the brand.

I use the Fromm-four star label, but I only use the dry. I've never used the canned, as the only canned food I use is Tripett.
I have used theyre gravy and didn't see a single problem with it.

My 65lb Am/Staff has been on Fromm since he came home from the shelter at 3mos old. At his vet visit at 3 years old I was told he is an absolute perfect specimen. Very Muscular and seems younger than he is. being mostly a white half naked dog he almost definitely should have shown some skin issues by this age so "keep doing what your doing". Honestly he is not exercised other than occasional walks. I don't do anything additional other than feed him kibble and water. So I attribute his condition to his food. The one time I gave him samples of I believe it was INOVa large he developed a yeast infection. I have used Fromm Gold Adult, Duck, Chicken, Salmon. I did not like they had there cans out in China just because the point of it. But since my dog is in excellent health and maintains an excellent muscular body there was no reason to change. My Neighbors Yorkie now on fromm after we sat and read his prescription food from vet. This poor pup may have been poisoned from his original food with the recall so he was now on prescription food for his digestion issues and just not well. However after reading the label for that prescription food UGGHHHH so now he is also on Fromm 4 star chicken and doing amazing. Had to even cut back on amount of food fed because he was gaining quickly. I am interested in reading about the other food people mentioned forgot what called starts with an O. THANKS FOR OPIONIONS.....edit ok I looked at Orijen looks good too. recall in Australia now though. Also noted grain free. fromm has a grain free food too 4 star surf and turff. Orijen very similar to fromm 4 star. So I'm sticking with Fromm

We have 2 boxer pups one 7months and other 15 weeks one has allergies, wanted to only feed one food. Fromm has been excellent for my pup with allergies. She was on Candidae, Innova, and Merrick from the Breeder who believes in switching up foods. With me Wellness, Cal Nat Chicken/Rice, Fromm Salmon, Fromm Duck and Sweet Pot, Addiction Kangaroo and Apples. With all those foods finally figured out what she's allergic to so the Fromm Duck and Sweet Pot has been top notch! Wish they would remove the chicken cartilage however, top allergy specialist said to not have any chicken in her food, but she's scratching and shaking her head less then ever almost not at all on Duck and Sweet Pot. Have to feed her almost 4 cups a day however at 7 months due to little protein and fat. But she's healthy and loves her food. The little baby pup is also eating the Fromm and couldn't be healthier. He doesn't have allergies however.
========================UPDATE===================== =======
Have to share with all that have pups or dogs with major allergies. My older pup now 8 to 9 months is on Pinnacle Duck and Potato, NO RICE or CHICKEN, NO CHICKEN CARTILAGE....she finally is NOT shaking her head first thing in morning or scratching first thing in morning or at night before bed. So far this is all she can eat now. Still have baby puppy on the Fromm Salmon he loves it. Again he has NO allergies it's the older pup that has severe allergies. Love the protein and fat content in this food as well. Unfortunately it's more expensive. But she's not scratching and shaking her head. Her ears are perfect clean no infection so it had to be the food. Good luck to all with dogs that have allergies.

I have a 2.1/2 year old giant Schnauzer who has been on the Puppy Gold since put on whole food and he looks magnifcant. The Breeder located in Wisconsin still feeds her Champion Giants the Puppy Gold and my dog's sire recently won his 5th Title (Best Working
Giant Schnauzer Title @ age 8) People see my dog and remark how great he looks & especially marvel at his deep black coat. You must be doing something right! I would not feed any other dog food to my Giant. Thanks

We switched to Fromm 4 star dog food after extensive research. Our 4 month old english sheepdog wasn't tolerating well Solid Gold's Wolf Cub food, but once we switched him over to Fromm, his digestion improved as well as his poop. I think that it helps to have the probiotics in the food (which wasn't the case with Solid Gold).

Last month, we gave him Duck and Sweet Potato, which he loved, and this month he is on the Salmon and Vegetables, which is great as well.

I like that they make the food in their own facility up in Wisconsin, and that it has a lot of healthy ingredients.

I analyzed the food and scored it a 110, A+, based on the following dog food scoring system:

How to grade your dog’s food: (Some brands are done at the very bottom)
Start with a grade of 100:

1) For every listing of “by-product”, subtract 10 points.

2) For every non-specific animal source (”meat” or “poultry”, meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points.

3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points.

4) For every grain “mill run” or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points.

5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. “ground brown rice”, “brewer’s rice”, “rice flour” are all the same grain), subtract 5 points.

6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points.

7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points.

8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points.

9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points.

10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points.

11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points.

12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points.

13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isn’t allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points.

14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isn’t allergic to beef), subtract 1 point.

15) If it contains salt (or sodium, as it is also called), subtract 1 point.

Extra Credit:

1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points.

2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points.

3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points.

4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points.

5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points.

6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points.

7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points.

8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points.

9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points.

10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point.

11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point.

12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count “chicken” and “chicken meal” as only one protein source but “chicken” and “salmon” as 2 different sources), add 1 point.

13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point.

14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free add 1 point.

We have a 3 year old English Bulldog who is a rather picky eater. He would barely touch California Natural, Prairie, Wellness, but has really loved the Fromm Four-Star Gourmet meals. We do them in a rotation and he has maintained a healthy weight, his coat looks great, and he gets as excited for mealtime as every bulldog should!
Our 6 month old Frenchie is extremely allergic to grains and has also done really well eating the grain-free surf & turf. He finally has consistently solid stool and is a lot more active. I would really recommend this to anyone!

The company is not using China made cans anymoe although they are still ridding the cans that were made in China. The kibble is made here in the US. There are so many things bought from China. There are also alot of Ameircans that visit or reside in China. Do they not eat whne they are there or tehy bring there own utensils LOL. The company is going forward and made a good decision to have the cans made here. I recommend this diet as its comprobaleto Wellness but costs less as Wellness had massive price increases in Oct. because components of there food are from over seas although they will say it is made in the USA.

Stay away from this food! It is one of the worst foods you can buy. It provides almost no nutritional value. My dog hated it too. He had diarrhea after eating this food. He hardly touched it. It made his coat dry. It is too fatty for older dogs.

FYI- I spoke with the company a couple days ago and they informed me that they have found a facility here in the United States to manufacturer their canned foods! I thought this was good news and I should pass it along- I will now want to try the canned as well as my dogs love the dry- and they don't usually like kibble. They told me they should be announcing in the next couple of months and re-launching the cans.

I agree with maltipoolover!  We love FROMM 4-star varieties.  I have used all of them, but my 3 dogs like the chicken, whitefish, and surf & turf the best.  They like the salmon okay, but the duck is their least favorite.  I also mix it with The Honest Kitchen Force.  Great food, too!  It is a dehydrated raw, grain-free food.

I grew up living next to the Fromm dog food factory in the 1970's and can still smell the stench of roasting horse meat. I used to visit the horses on "death row" in the paddock behind the factory. They were not well cared for as they awaited their slaughter.

I am a breeder of collies and after a long search for the best food I could get and a lot of reading etc, I settled on the Fromm Brand of Dog and Cat foods. I have had good success with it for the past 6 months and promote it where ever I can. I like the ingredients, all wholesome. I was cooking their food myself but I don't have to with this food on the market, it contains all the ingredients that I was using. Nancy Weaver, email colliesdogs@yahoo.ca.

I dont understand why everyone is making such a big deal about things being used from China. Americans feel it is ok to purchse cars from overseas (asian manufacturers for one, and germany!!) buy gasoline from companies that purchase their oils from Sauidi Arabia, and buy fast food from restaurant chains that promote animal abuse, and buy candy from the Mars company (who, by the way tests on animals- look it up- sadly, they are also the manufacturer of pedigree dog foods), everyone is complaining about chinese meat and cans used in dog food? It makes no sense to me- but anyway my dogs love the food,i have had no problems with it at all, and I will continue to purchase it.

I have 3 dogs ranging in age from 4 months to 13 years. I wanted a food I could feed to all of them, and so I started them all on the Fromm 4 star Chicken & Veg. My Cavaliers showed an amazing improvement in their coats after one week. My old girl, however, has come down with a food allergy. It is either something in this food OR in the Avoderm vitamin supplement I am putting on top of it. I am experimenting to see which one is causing the allergy. Overall, I think the food is excellent and they really like it. However, after reading more info I think I am going to switch to Orijen and go back to feeding all three of them three different foods. Yuck.

Originally seemed to be GREAT ingredients until I got to the sweet potatoes, potatoes and potato filler.  WAY TOO many starches for dogs ~ let alone people!  Two meat MEAL sources ~ which is great and two meats (70% water).  People I have talked to that use this food say they have no issues.

I was going to by the four-star line of dry foods and their canned food also.  I stopped when I found out the cans were made in China.  I also decided against the four-star line of dry foods... too much grains....... Each dry food has 5 or 6 grains... When you add all that grains, the first ingredient = grains (not meat as advertised).  Fromm does a good job splitting the grains.....

We feed Fromm Gold Puppy to our dachshund puppies with good success. We are a Wisconsin breeder, and I was happy to be using a product made in Wisconsin. This is no longer the case. Their canned food is made in China. It makes me wonder what other cost cutting measures the company will come up with. I no longer trust the obtuse management of a company that would believe people would want to buy a premium dog food from China. I wouldn't even expect OLD ROY to be made in China. What's next? Dry dog food from Sri Lanka?

I have used Fromm in the past, particularly their cat food which seemed like a good value for the price (I was getting it deeply discounted.) However, their decision to produce their canned food in China is mind-boggling. Even without the recent melamine and cynauric acid contamination issues, the quality control for both human food and animal feed is atrocious. They've had major incidents of *human* poisoning from tainted processed food and from contaminated medicines.

In addition, China openly raises dogs are openly raised to be eaten. With the above in mind, how meaningful is Fromm's claims their food is made in China because they wanted it made in a human-grade canning facility? In China, that could mean a place that cans products with dog meat as a major ingredient.

Fromm a wonderful food with wholesome ingredients.  ALL of their dry dog food is made here in the United States at their own plant in Mequon, Wisconsin.  I know their canned food is made in China, but it is made in a human food facility, not a pet facility with no regulation like Merrick or Evangers.  I feel safe and use it for my four-legged kid with great success.

Their 4 star formula brand foods are a  good quality food.

TAKE NOTE:  >>> Their Adult Gold formula is not so good (Use of low quality grains and controversial fillers. )  3 stars only.

This review is for their 4 star line up of foods:

The first and second ingredients in the food are named meat products.

There are further meat meal ingredients 9th and 15th on the ingredient list. The carbohydrate content of the food comes from sweet potatoes and grains meaning that the food is relatively low in grain content.

The grains used are rice, barley and oatmeal, all of which are good quality low-allergenic grains that provide additional carbohydrates and protein to the food.

The use of whole eggs and a range of fruits and vegetables in the food, as well as a good range of probiotics.

Tomato pomace and oat hulls are fillers, but these are fortunately a very small proportion of the food.

Fromms Four Star formulas are semi-allergy foods with low grain content.

Do not like that it is imported form China though.

Switched my 13 year old black lab from Iams (crap) to Canidae a few months ago. Canidae was ok, but he has soft stool on it and I did not notice any improvement in his coat. So I switched to Fromm Senior Gold (11% fat content vs 16% in Fromm Adult Gold). Also, it has 90mg of glucosimine and chondroiton through the chicken cartiledge ingredient. Look at the first five ingredients - all very good, no fillers. I spoke with a company rep on the phone, she was very knowledgeable, and explained to me they do not make the food until the distrubitor orders it. I can hardly open the bag and he has his nose in it - he loves it!

I've been feeding Fromm Puppy Gold to my Pomeranians for about 6 months now. I breed and show Poms and have several champion including a top 10 Pom. I've tried many premium dog kibbles over the past 8-1/2 years and this is probably the best overall kibble. I feed the puppy kibble to all ages except the over wieght seniors as Pom have a higher metabolism than most other breeds. I also feed a raw, home made diet daily but the Fromm Puppy Gold is my base kibble. I've noticed less tear staining with all of my dogs and in particular my white Poms. I'm surprised there are so few ratings on this food when I know of several other Pom breeders feeding it and it's such an excellent food. I had loose stools for a the first few days but not unusual when making a food change. Stools are all normal now. I tried some of the canned foods as well and my dogs liked them very much but I'll stick with the kibble for their morning meal and my home made raw diet for their dinner.

The Fromm 4 star has been a great asset for my pet store. It is my go-to dog food for problem solving. Single source protien is very helpful when dealing with issues. I personally used the food for the last 2 years of my 14 year old Gordon Setters life and I believe it is one of the reasons he lasted so long.

I have been feeding this food to my twenty-two month old Golden retriever for the past four months. I am feeding the four-star nutritional recipe chicken and vegetables, and have been very impressed with the energy level and overall mood of my dog. It seems like an excellent food judging from the ingredients list, and I wonder why it has never been rated here. They make for different recipes-salmon, chicken, beef, and duck. If anyone else has tried this food, I am interested in knowing what you think about it.

pretty good ingredients and philosophy... one of the better choices in terms of palatability... just didn't work well for my picky eater... but i've heard this is what people suggest for the picky ones... he did eat the salmon formula for about a week (FOUR STAR NUTRITIONALS SALMON A LA VEG) so that's worth praising 3 stars for ingredients and quality... and dedication to palatability
