At least it brings waves to the surfers who spend the whole summer waiting for some decent swell!

The weather here in South Florida is actually great about 90% of the time. However we do get hurricanes here every once in a while. I'd say on average we get one storm every two years. Most of the time, they're just a nuissance, your electricity goes out for some time, the streets get flooded, businesses close down. Sometimes they're more significant. Hurricane Andrew flatened most of Southern Dade county back in 1992 and it was never the same again. The past two years have been unusual in that we've been hit by 4 storms a year! The National Weather Service seems to think actually that this might be a less active year because water temperatures around Florida are cooler, especially in comparison to last year. Warm water is what fuels hurricane growth. Less active is a relative term though, they're anticipating 15 storms, as opposed to last year's 26! Who knows, maybe 8 of the 15 might hit Florida. I've been think lately that perhaps it may be time to leave the state! Maybe these hurricanes are natures way of telling us that we aren't meant to live in this low, vulnerable swamp known as Florida!

Certainly a high risk, especially now that we seem to be seeing more of them than usual. On top of that, they seem to be frequently more powerful than they usually are. As for garage's statement: Having lived in both, Tornado Alley and Hurricane Central; I'd have to say that I'd rather go through the hurricanes. Tornados in the mid-west are devastating; not so much on a larger scale per se, but because of how quick they trample over everything in their paths. With hurricanes, you also have much more warning to get out of the way if it suits you.
