 | GenghisTheHun (181) 07/10/2006 | Bedell Smith was the first director of the CIA to serve during wartime. He had been Ike's chief of staff during World War II. He was lucky to preside over the agency during its first era of greatest expansion, the Korean War.
The agency went from small potatoes to a large player. Unfortunately the projects that the agency did during the Korean War were ineffectual or disasters.
The early agency did not have much political oversight as the USA was trying to play catch-up. The original idea was to develope an agency that was similar to the KGB.
