I disagree. Hackman has played villains before, and he's played unlikeable characters. Ever see him the Conversation? The Royal Tennenbaums? Birdcage? Superman? He might have overplayed this one. Hopkins has more subtlety. But maybe it would have been interesting.

This was a wise decision. Gene is a likeable character and the nihilistic "Silence of the Lambs" would have hurt his career.
