he would have been decent, but hackman's portrayal of popeye was gritty and believable.

I agree with oscargamblesfro. In my opinion, Gene Hackman has been the most consistent quality performer/major star in Hollywood for the last quarter century. Those who are close have at least one blemish on their record(s). Dustin Hoffman - Ishtar Rober DeNiro - that idiotic baseball stalker film he did with Wesley Snipes

I like McQueen, but when Hackman's 'on,' there's relatively few as good as him.
