The movie would not have been a fraction as "revered" as it is today had Robert Redford played Benjamin Braddock ... and that's no rap on Redford; he's a quality performer. It's just that that role (and the movie) was entirely defined by Hoffman's thoughtful/sensitive/unique performance. Redford could not have pulled off the "dorkiness" that Hoffman was able to convey.

Didn't think he could bring enough naivete to the role. I suspect he was right. Hoffman's neurotic energy was perfect in the role, and Redford's career wasn't hurt a bit.
