This neighborhood was the subject of the book "Death of an American Jewish Community," by Levine and Harmon when this community went from a predominately white Jewish community to alost all Black in just a short period of time in the 1960's. Block-busting and other tactics were used to scare out the white commnunity and to buy their property at reduced prices and sell it to people who couldn't afford it at highly inflated prices with the whole thing financed by Uncle Sap and federal housing programs. Mattapan is now the largest Haitian community in Massachusetts.
