"Your pants don't make you look fat, your fat makes you look fat!"

A loaded question if there ever was one. But I honestly want to know-- when I ask my husband, I expect an honest answer. Some color and styles are more flattering than others.

I grew up in a very honest family. My father would tell us if our butts looked big in a particular outfit. Actually, he'd say "Ya got a fat ass" but I digress...

If a friend wants an honest opinion, I'm going to give it to her. Instead of using my father's tactic I would say say it looks a little tight and then suggest what may look better.

Nope, i'm the honest friend, I'll tell you the truth.......girl, those pants are too dang tight, I can see the bagel you ate for breakfast lol

Personally, I don't have enough youthful delusions left to even bring it up any more. But when it does pop into the conversation - it's certainly among the more hazardous questions ever asked. Especially touchy between a woman and man but a potentially bad experience even if you are another woman and the person asking is your mother, sister, daughter or best friend. If asked though, I would in general select words wisely and with economy. Overall it is probably a question best left to you and your reflection.

Women why do you have to ask this question? Its a very touchy question, and almost impossible to answer reguardless of what you tell her lol.

If you don't look right I would tell you, just in a more polite way.

She'll kick my ass if I tell her she looks good and then somebody else comes along and tells her that it doesn't look good on her. The trick isn't telling her she looks fat, but finding a great way to suggest something else.

My mama told me that you never lie about this...you can say things that don't sound mean and get the same point across...it's called constructive criticism...you are doing that friend a favor....

I wouldn't lie...but i wouldn't say somebody looks fat in something..just that it doesn't fit them particularly well!

That's why I myself know better than to ask such questions because some people can be painfully frank.

i suppose to spare feelings or getting in trouble for telling the truth. I know not to ask if I look fat in something because it has been a long time since I have been a size 5. I know enough to stay away from the tight fitting clothes.  I hope no one asks me. I do not want to hurt feelings.

I'm usually a very bunt person...I'll always tell you how it is. But I hate to hurt the people I care about so I might fib a little.

Okay so I have lied about this a couple times to spare someones feelings but I usually can tell the truth to people about it.If they are sensitive though Im gonna lie..so if your sensitive towards stuff like that just dont fucking ask me unlesss you want me to lie lol

Never, ever under any circumstances, especially if you live under the same roof with her, tell a woman she looks fat. If you can't keep a straight face and tell a lie at the same time, then feint, shove food in your mouth or run out of the house as fast as you can, or be prepared for the conseqences (there will be consequences).

It really all depends on my mood. But because I am gay, I almost always tell them they look fat. They shouldn't ask if they don't want the real answer.

Just use the reflex action. Don't even stop to think about it. Just say "You always look good to me, baby."

The reason why guys lie about this is because they don't want to end up sleeping in the garage on a crappy air mattress.

If I look fat in something; I want to know, as do all of my friends. My friends only come to me because they know that I'll be honest (because I know they want the truth and won't be hurt by it). My friends are the same way with me; just last week my best friend told me not to wear my new pants ever again ha! Apparently they weren't very flattering...

If the answer is yes, I stay silent.
