Written by JJ Cale who does a much better version than Clapton.

Probably my least favorite Clapton song, not because of the subject matter but because of the monotony. Ironically, it's one of his most famous songs.

I had a friend once who hated the monotonous, uninspired music that Clapton was performing during this period (late 70's? early 80's?), particularly this song. That was until he started snorting/injecting cocaine in a very serious fashion. Following that, he couldn't get enough of this song...or "Snowblind" or any other pertinent drug song. They were played incessantly on his tape deck and became his "theme songs." To me, there was no more cogent illustration of the perils and deleterious effects of cocaine abuse and, by extension, drug addiction in general (although I personally like Sabbath's "Snowblind"). Needless to say, this friend is dead now (unfortunately, cocaine wasn't the only thing he was addicted to).
