03/18/2006 | This one actually has a lot to do with his half-brother Terry, who had mental problems throughout his life, and eventually killed himself in 1985. From the great 'Hunky Dory" album in 1971, a fine , eerie, weird song. Bowie was always really more concerned with issues of madness rather than drugs in his lyrics, though I suppose there could be some drug references in it as well, and it's not as if he necessarily avoided the topic of drugs. Yet, it may very well be a case of the utter strangeness of the song causing it to be mistaken for being about drugs when it isn't.
