Ha ha, are you kidding me? I was in Honolulu without a car for a week because I heard the buses were okay. While I would still recommend not renting a car, since you don't want to pollute such a beautiful place, you need to plan on long waits. Buses would pass us stupid tourists by all the time, unable to pick us up because they were full or the driver just didn't feel like it. I guess I haven't been there long enough to judge fairly, but the coverage in Waikikii wasn't that great.
