Shakespeare in Love is a lovely film, but it can't hold a candle to Saving Private Ryan.

It's not because it was a bad film. 'Shakespeare in Love' was actually a very good film. However, this film was not the best film of its year: 'Saving Private Ryan' was. And if the argument for this year's Oscar winner, 'Crash' was because of its deemed cultural significance, what were voters thinking when they decided that 'Shakespeare in Love' was a better film? Answer: they weren't thinking. Clearly, Steven Spielberg's 'Saving Private Ryan' was the class of the group for its harrowing portrayal of human sacrifice and dignity. In short, Oscar voters ought to be ashamed for their ignorance in this particular case.

Pretty mediocre film, but besides the obvious best film "Life is Beautiful" which didn't have a prayer, the competition wasn't real stiff.

there were good things about Shakespeare in Love. however I really liked Life is Beautiful too. as for best supporting actress I like Judi Dench but she was not on screen long enough to really see if she was best sup. actress. I liked Kathy Bates. Brenda Blethyn was very good as the mom in Little voice too. some say Gwyneth Paltrow should not have won. I liked her performance but i also thought Meryl STreep was good as the mother on One true thing.and Fernanda Montenegro was wonderful in Central Station. I hear Cate Blanchett was good in Elizabeth but i did not see it.

A travesty in more ways than one. I'll always remember this as the year that Judi Densch received an Oscar for spending less than seven minutes onscreen.. and beat out Kathy Bates' oustanding performance as "Libby" in 'Primary Colors.'
