Easily the best that year. The other films aren't bad, particularly Crying Game, but this is a work of near genius.

This year is a virtual tossup for me. For storytelling and engagement, I'd give it to The Crying Game, but for filmmaking craft, Unforgiven is hard to beat. The only other nominee that comes close is Howard's End.

Particular memorable in its depiction that the life of the Cowboy and outlaw in the old West was not glamorous or heroic, just downright violent. Unforgiven is to the Western what Deer Hunter was to the war movie. Clint is the greatest.

In some ways, this was just as "revolutionary" or "off the beaten path" for cowboy films as was Brokeback Mountain. Many people didn't care for the recent film starring Heath Ledger because it featured two guys who had a hard time keeping their hands off one another. To people thinking in the traditional Hollywood John Wayne sense, this just seemed almost fundamentally wrong. Well Unforgiven was not too far away from that sort of unconventionality. There was nothing glamorous, heroic or particularlly redeeming about the protagonists in this movie starring Clint Eastwood. Gun fighting and cowboys shooting 'em up was largely portrayed for what it probably was during the frontier days - a contractual arrangement entered into for profit. One guy gets shot while unarmed, another while sitting on the toilet ... there were plenty of killings done by the "heroes" in the film that did not reflect well upon them or make them seem brave or upstanding. I liked this movie, but considering how starkly it challenged the traditional western model, I am somewhat surprised it did not receive at least a degree of the criticism that has been tossed at Ang Lee's film.

Can't remember the competition, but I have absolutely no quarrel with the selection of this outstanding film, one of the best of the 90's IMO.

It was a good film, but the best? I'd have to see the other choices.
