Yeah, I still find it hard to look Lecter in the eyes and this movie was the clear pick for this award.

Excellent thriller, deserved the win , albeit in a weak year for movies. Movie is still fresh today if you watch it. You can't take your eyes off it when Hannibal Lector is on screen. The best movie villian in history.

This flick really lucked out. It is a nihilistic piece of trash, but it had no competition.

Lets' see: Beauty and the Beast, Bugsy, Prince of Tides and JFK were the other nominees. The academy must have snorted a couple more lines and voted for the Lambs.

Tough year for me to choose. The performances by Foster and Hopkins give Silence of the Lambs the slight edge, but both JFK and Beauty and the Beast are right in there.

Great movie. Though the movie lost some credibility in my eyes, by using an FBI cadet wearing the equivalent of a paper "Trainee" hat to hunt down a serial killer, the movie is otherwise flawless and mesmerizing. Hannibal Lecter became an icon of pop culture. I read Thomas Harris' "Red Dragon" years before Silence of the Lambs came out. I had a hunch back then that the Lecter character would make for a great movie. They made 4 Lecter movies (counting "Manhunter").

This movie was heads above its competition. I have never seen a movie follow a book so closely and the fact it got best actor and actress too was also great. Anthony Hopkins and Jody Foster nailed their parts. I read the book only weeks before the movie came out so it was still fresh in my mind.

I think this deserved the win, though I don't remember anything about the competition.
