 | callitdowntheline75 (53) 03/20/2006 | With a cast which included John Cazale, Christopher Walken, Meryl Streep, John Savage and Robert DeNiro, what else would you expect from 'The Deer Hunter'? 'Deer Hunter' was as great a movie as you'll ever see. Besides the acting, the harrowing storyline of the ill-effects of war on each individual captures the heart of moviegoers. The movie's individual scenes, themselves, were horrifically realistic and gut-wrenching. Alas, the 'Deer Hunter' was among the high benchmarks of the 1970s movie rennaisance.

 | trebon1038 (62) 03/10/2006 | This was a great movie. It left me thinking a lot about the whole Vietnam era. Coming from a Pennsylvania hunting family this could have been about people I knew. It also did a good job of portraying what war can do to one's psyche.

 | alpepper (21) 03/10/2006 | Rough movie to sit through, but an epic. And the cast is like the lineup of the 1927 Yankees.
Certain movie scenes and sound bites become timeless hip culture where the very utterance makes people laugh in its sheer rememberance. The horrific Russian Roulette scene where the VC Captain screams "Di-Di Mao" fits this description. When I use it (while feigning handing a pistol) to a friend, it gets laughs -- big laughs. I use to use it on my kids when I wanted them to go to timeout -- until they ratted me out to Mommy.

 | FranksWildYears (48) 03/10/2006 | Assured story telling from a director whose subsequent output has been spotty at best. One of the few, if not the only, films to present that moral quagmire of the times both on the domestic front and the battlefield. It was controversial for its depictions of the Viet Cong and post war Saigon, but the controvesrsy likely was a reflection of America's tortured conscience about the period. The film is probably worth a look again given the events of contempory times.
The scene of the surviving friends singing "God Bless America" at the end is quite stirring.

 | SZinHonshu (44) 03/09/2006 | A great movie deserving of all the accolades it received. Star turn performances from multiple actors who are still contemporarily relevant and in-demand almost 30 years later.

 | CanadaSucks (45) 03/09/2006 | It's like an opera at times. . .it drags in the middle. . .but a flawless cast and full of memorable performances. . .the small-town-Pennsylvania flavor of the film adds relevance and realism to me. . .

 | oscargamblesfro (76) 03/09/2006 | Yeah, I think so...pretty obvious choice in my book. Walken, DeNiro, Streep, John Savage, and John Cazale were all terrific in it. Sadly, it was Cazale's, best known as Fredo in the Godfather 1 and 2's last film.
