1974 was arguably the greatest year in Oscar history. With a superb selection of movies which included 'Chinatown' (one of my all-time favorites) and 'The Conversation'- both of which should have won in most other years, Mario Puzo's and Francis Ford Coppola's 'The Godfather, Part II' was a juggernaut which unofficially affirmed the movie renaissance of the 1970s. Blessed with an ensemble cast which included luminaries such as Al Pacino, Lee Strasberg, John Cazale, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Michael V. Gazzo, and the great Robert DeNiro as patriarch Vito Corleone; and a storyline which made the Corleone saga whole and complete ('Part II' seemingly served as bookends to the original), 'Part II' was not to be denied its place in the annals of motion picture history. And if anything, 'Part II' is arguably the greatest film ever. Definitely, though, IT was the greatest sequel ever!

A good choice, out of a group of very strong contenders. I prefer "Chinatown" which I think is one of the best films ever made, or "The Conversation", but this movie is deserving.

For a decade so maligned by many, rightly or wrongly, for it's music, fashions, etc, it was a great one for film. This great film beat out other great films of that year like Coppola's other fine movie "The Conversation," and "The Last Detail." 1974 was a very bad year for music, maybe the worst one of that decade, but it was certainly a good time for film.

But not as good as the first movie, which didn't win.
