Nothing else needs to be said, the perfect movie. Look at some of the movies on this lest and how dated they are. I could watch The Godfather over and over again and never get tired of it.

One of the top five films of all time. An epic film.

Arguably the greatest movie of all time, author Mario Puzo's and director Francis Ford Coppola's 'The Godfather' has withstood the test of time with electrifying and unforgettable performances by Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, James Caan, John Cazale, Diane Keaton, and of course the great Marlon Brando. This movie set the standard for which all gangster films have since tried to emulate and live up to (but all hopelessly fall short against). And last (but not least) is the theme of family, amidst the chaos and tragedy, and the lessons learned (or unlearned) from generation to generation. The film stands janus-faced in moviedom with its dark imagery. Moreover, it is an integral part of pop culture as THE iconic movie of its era (and possibly any other era). 'The Godfather' is an undisputed masterpiece of American film.

The film was so great and stands up so well because its so real. All of the performances show amazing understatement and restraint that lend to the tone of a world lived in the shadows. And thats pretty amazing considering the cast of scene steelers including Pacino, Caan, Brando and Duvall, all of whom have a history of dominating the screen. The period depiction is also amazingly faithful without trying to be showy as it generally is in mob movies like Bugsy. The interiors are very spartan and grey, plain and quiet. While the story appears very complex on the surface, depicting the bizantine machinations of the New York underworld at a critical period of change, its really about the passing of a family's leadership from one generation to the next and the survival of its core values. A rare film that can be seen over and over without the necessity of eye candy or thrilling action set pieces.

More deserving that the sequel, not because it was a better film (its not, Godfather II is much better) but because it faced weaker competition. Cabaret, Deliverance and Sounder, are no where near as good as Chinatown, The Conversation and Lenny.
