I soak the area with warm salt water to help it heal. Cleaning the area with saline solution helps to keep it clean and from infection.

 | Vudija (92) 03/13/2006 | As has been mentioned before; I had my belly button pierced last year. Had I known more about this piercing before having it done; I probably would have never done it. Because of it's popularity, most people don't realize the healing time and the fact that the belly button, aside from the mouth, is the dirtiest place to have a piercing. I was told, by the piercer, the healing time was 3 months, but after he finished the piercing, he told me that it could be up to a year. I took my chances, hoping that it would heal fairly quickily, as my tattoo healed faster than we thought. No such luck, I stayed infected for 5 months before I finally had to give up and seek antibiotics and remove the jewelry. I have a permanent and discolored scar and there's nothing I can do about it now. I think that if you're going to get a piercing, you should do A LOT of research (not just rely on your one friend who did it). Everyone's body is different, so not everyone will have the same results.
