See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass,
but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and
kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences,
and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of
sorrows. Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill
you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name's sake. And
then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one
another. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive
many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will
grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved.
And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a
witness to all the nations, and then the end will come."

There are no conventional armies in a position to fight the United States. Not the Russians, Chinese, Iranians, North Koreans or anyone else. And in the Middle East, Israel is, on a smaller scale, the equivalent of its more powerful ally - the unassailable military superpower in the region.
The reason we are seeing a surge in terrorism is because conventional warfare is becoming impossible. It's simply not a contest anymore. We've proven that against the Iraqis (twice) and in Afghanistan. The United States simply has a contemporary force that is unparalleled and not even open to challenge. And those who may be in a position to challenge us in the next 20 years (the Indians and Chinese) are too invested and interrelated with the U.S. for their own future growth and benefit to reap any benefit from destroying us.
Here is the recipe for avoiding major military catastrophes for at least the next 10 years (and probably the remainder of our lives): Keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of the Arabs or anyone who regularly steps into a mosque.

 | doobiesNhof (21) 03/17/2006 | Well folks, WW III started 9/11/2001 IMO. We are mired in the Middle East with Iraq, Afghanistan and a possible future threat in Iran. We are forced to watch our backs, so to speak, at every turn here at home and abroad. We will be in this war for a long, long time. My greatest fear of this war is that it will NEVER end and in fact will esculate into something that even our worst nightmares couldn't dream up. The enemies we face today will not hesitate to blow themselves up or crash planes into buildings because they feel they will be rewarded in heaven.
We really don't know who our enemy is and because of that we are in some cases shooting at shadows or killing the wrong people. It has caused many of us to stereotype individuals and this creates the growing problem of developing even more prejudice than the world already had to start with. Hate is building worldwide on both sides. I'm fearful that the next attack on American soil will make the 9/11 attacks pale by comparison. I hope and pray there will no more but realistically it is inevitable. The rest of the fears on this list (except terrorists) are possible but don't scare me anything like WW III.
