I have known a few people personally who have lost their homes for different reasons. scary not having an income coming in.

Sure, everybody should be afraid of losing their job (otherwise work would never get done), but to have this rank among the world's top fears? At this moment unemployment is very low in America, and it has been stable for quite a while. Our society as a whole pretty well is employed. This will change from time to time, but in all truth there are far greater things to worry about than this until it actually happens. If you do a good job with your finances (in other words, living within your means), you'll be fine being unemployed for a few months. Most people are unemployed at some point in their life, and most of them seem to make it out alive, even if that means having to turn back to their parents or being on unemployment for a while.
