i am not scared for myself as i am for my children. i was walking with my 2 boys and 2 of their friends (ages 16-17-19) to the library when 2 young men hoping to capture their reactions on a video camera came speeding toward them yelling racial slurs and threats of violence. when they didn't get a reaction the first time they tried it again. the boys wouldn't give them satisfaction of responding and i was proud of them. i worry though that something more confrontational could happen where they might have to defend themselves. we have a growing gang problem here and it is a concern when you have boys that were raised that being in a gang is a sign of weakness and sometimes then are targeted for confrontations.

Ah, but in the United States where guns are good and legal I can shoot somebody if they try to kill me. I don't worry too much about these bold criminals. Why? They prey on the weak and I'm anything but that. If I get around them I shamlessly throw down on their punk asses, like a couple weeks ago when this wanna be tough guy reached in his jacket for a gun after he kicked my brother's van for "being too close to him" in a parking lot and I made it clear that if his hand left his jacket with anything in it that I would take it away from him and beat him with it.

In England this concerns me deeply. The rise in knife crime is almost scary and nothing seems to be done about this. I'm having problems comprehending how a fifteen-year-old manages to purchase a knife from a shop, I'm having even more problems wondering how our youths are now killing each other and basically are on the rampage and teachers and the police have their hands tied in red tape due to this "softly-softly" approach when it comes to the law. In England a drug dealer gets a longer sentence than someone who has murdered another human being, so much for the value of human life.

People are acting more thuggish because they are bombarded with hysteric messages from the media and there is a general feeling that one is powerless to change things for the better.Violent solutions have been chosen by our own leaders in situations where there were other options.People with extreme views are trying to push their philosophies on everyone else, and the country is more divided than ever before. The future looks bleak and ugly, encouraging the worst element to "live for the moment".There IS hope, but that lies WITHIN each person, and in real connections with those we love:if you are kept too busy and rattled by current events,it is hard to tap into that well of strength and wisdom.
