 | minkey (36) 03/17/2008 | Just read a story in Jon Barron's newsletter that made me think twice about drinking tap water. The AP concluded a 5-month investigation last week which found that the drinking water of at least 41 million Americans contain trace amounts of pharmaceuticals, including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones. These drugs come from animals (from the antibiotics and hormones they receive) and from people (all the prescription and recreational drugs we take find their way into the sewers, and recycled back into our drinking water). The major potential causes are the major drop in age of puberty in children, and that the release of antibiotics in the water cause a huge increase in bacteria and viruses. The article also says that bottled water is not a great alternative - many bottlers just repackage the tap water w/out testing it for pharmaceuticals, but instead to get a good water distiller or a really good water filter.

 | Underspin (24) 03/19/2006 | I've drunk the tap water in Sao Paulo, Brazil - something most locals rarely ever do - and am still alive. In fact, I didn't even get sick. Yet like many I've grown accustomed to the store bought variety, though I continue view it as a luxery, not a necessity. Clearly we should all be thankful that we've actually got the option between clean, clear running (tap) water and a better tasting, expensive variety - unlike hundreds of millions around the globe who have neither.

 | Vudija (92) 03/18/2006 | *Rating MY tap* I guess the high mineral content is a problem for mine. I have a skin allergy to it, and it makes my mouth dry. We have no choice but to buy bottled water. I'd dehydrate if they didn't; there's no way they could get me to drink the tap here.

 | Drummond (54) 03/18/2006 | I'm rating my own tap water, which is pretty bad. But it depends on the municipality. In the Bay Area, San Rafael tested best with blind tasters, even higher than some bottled brands. San Mateo rated lowest.
