 | Redoedo (39) 10/31/2005 | Has improved somewhat in recent years, but there is still an unfortunate stigma attached to individuals with mental illnesses that often leads to public ridicule and discrimination. It's unfortunate that so many would hold individuals who are mostly suffering from a condition beyond their control with such contempt, but I suppose it's the kind of world we live in. It's still a concern that needs to be addressed, but it appears to be evaporating.

 | HistoryFan (98) 10/31/2005 | I am currently on a 3 yr. COBRA plan though my parent's work. I recently got off of my parent's health insurance plan due to age. I looked around for good health insurance deals to cover me until I find employment. Unfortunately, none would take me because, surprise, surprise, I have depression and anxiety and I'm being treated for it, which qualifies as a pre-existing condition.
WHY DO THESE PEOPLE THINK I'M GETTING HEALTH INSURANCE IN THE FIRST PLACE?!

 | Underspin (24) 02/11/2005 | A good friend of mine is on SSI because of mental health issues - and I've seen first hand how others (including some in the mental health profession) have treated him due to his social stigma. A little understanding (sans pity) can go a long way...

 | LanceRoxas (40) 11/05/2004 | When the bipolar guy beats up his other employees he needs to be discriminated against. When the alcholic can't show up to work he needs to be discriminated against. When the schizophrenic is talking to his other friends he'd be hard to keep on the job. Would you like to hire Ted Bundy- he has a great resume!?

 | irishgit (138) 09/06/2004 | Certainly there are degrees of mental illness, and there is considerable difference between types of mental illness. By and large, these are not dangerous or irritating folks and should not be treated as such. However, I find the recent sick-leave for depression epidemic that I see in a lot of work places a little wearing. Suck it up and get a helmet.

 | jgls (12) 09/05/2004 | since they are unable to adequately defend themselves from discrimination, someone has to.

 | Molfan (57) 09/05/2004 | Nobody asks to be mentally ill. yet it seems like it is okay to discriminate against them. Worse some think it is acceptable to even make fun of them by calling them names, such as Crazy, wack-job, screwball etc. why is this allright? you would not usually make fun of someone with physical disability, mental illness can be very crippling. to be harassed on top of this, not fair.

 | Bird808 (52) 08/18/2004 | People with mental illness are more likely to be attacked than to attack anyone, the reason being their extremely vulnerable. Thanks to the mass medias interpretation of mental illness and their documented crimes its no wonder this group is severley prejudiced against.

 | Cindyo (10) 08/13/2004 | It's disgusting when I see people make fun of these people. They don't choose to be this way, and they have no control of it. Some of these people are the most nice and hard-working people I have associated with. It is not right to harass people in this condition, we need to help them.

 | scarletfeather (47) 08/11/2004 | I don't think it's as prevalent as it once was because now seeking help for psychological or emotional issues has become more accepted.
