 | Drummond (54) 03/24/2006 | John Stuart Mill was the first member of the British Parliament to endorse women's suffrage, and later wrote extensively about woman's liberation, probably coining the term long before it became a fashion. He is the author of On Liberty, which argues that the government has no business restricting any behavior that is not materially harmful to another individual. Initially, this meant that he opposed economic regulations, although he later came to accept some reforms and the idea that a completely laisse faire system would inevitably lead to harm.
Mills was also an advocate of the moral theory of utilitarianism, which holds that actions should be devised to maximize the level of happiness and pleasure for the greatest amount of people. He also argued that intellectual , spiritual, or higher pleasure is intrinsically superior to physical or lower pleasure.
